In an effort to achieve the success that we all want for players and programs, the Alabama High School Athletic Association is committed to educating and promoting the concept of sportsmanship. Therefore, we have taken the initiative to create a Sportsmanship Manual to serve as a guide on our journey to becoming a model state high school athletic association. This manual contains valuable information and should serve as a key reference not only in planning for the upcoming athletic year but as a refresher of sportsmanship principles and practices all year round. To improve good sportsmanship, everyone needs to adhere to the policies in the manual.

Handball can be played with any kind of bouncing ball on practically any kind of wall. The United States Handball Association promotes “any ball, any wall” in teaching. Teachers are encouraged to use any available equipment and space. Handball can be taught as a unit for the entire class in the gymnasium or used as a station activity in one section of the gym. There is no need for regulation-sized courts in a gymnasium. Cones and floor tape work well to mark playing spaces and boundaries.

The following lesson plans for teaching handball in middle and secondary schools have been written for grades 6-12. Court size and distances (from the wall when hitting a ball) can easily be adjusted to match the developmental levels of learners.

This resource is part of the Frontline collection, describing the evolution of digital media from an industry that sought out teens to one in which teens seek out content to “like.” As school-aged children spend more time in digital spaces, companies are able to use information that they gather from their activities. This is different from how it once was. In 2001, corporations chased kids down and tried to sell cool teen culture back to them. Today, teens tell the world what they think is cool using the social currency of their generation: likes, follows, friends, and retweets. When kids like something online, it becomes part of the identity that they broadcast to the world.

In this activity, students will use a beach ball to practice their volleying skills. Students will volley the ball to themselves and hit it up in the air with an open hand. Students will next volley the ball up in the air, let it bounce on the floor and volley it up again. Students will then volley the ball off of a wall. A tapeline can be added to the wall to make sure it is volleyed high enough up in the air. The next progression of this activity incorporates another student. Volleying the beach ball between two students can now occur, with both students continuing to use proper technique.

Body image refers to how people see themselves. Distorted body image (also called negative body image) refers to an unrealistic view of how someone sees their body.  Like eating disorders, it is seen most commonly in women, but many men also suffer from the disorder.

You begin forming your perceptions of your body’s attractiveness, health, acceptability, and functionality in early childhood.  This body image continues to form as you age and receive feedback from peers, family members, coaches, etc.

Personality traits such as perfectionism and self-criticism can also influence the development of a negative internalized image of your body.
