The Girls Engaged in Math and Science (GEMS) Expo, offered by the Alabama State Department of Education, is an educational experience designed to actively involve girls in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. We believe that every girl has the potential to be a leader, a problem solver, and a trailblazer in the world of STEM.

ALEX supports the development and implementation of the Alabama Courses of Study. Through the alabamastandards.org platform, educators will be able to view standards across subject areas and grade levels. This platform utilizes the Competencies and Academic Standards Exchange® (CASE®), facilitating the exchange of information about learning outcomes, competencies, and skills.


The GEMS Expo is a one-day event that includes:
- A student project showcase
- Interactive and engaging STEM investigations
- A visit with female role models
Accepted teams have the opportunity to select from four locations across the state of Alabama: Birmingham, Gulf Shores, Huntsville, or Auburn.
