This novice low activity is a great introduction to ASL for elementary-aged students. The original lesson plan was created for enhancing reading comprehension in regular classroom settings. However, this approach is a perfect way to connect ASL with Language Arts standards. There are eight vocabulary words that appear in the humorous book Sam's Sandwich, all of which students learn to sign in American Sign Language. The signs are first taught and then the students sign the vocabulary words each time they hear them in the text. Extension activities encourage students to learn more vocabulary words in ASL. Note: Teachers will need access to a copy of Sam's Sandwich by David Pehlam (Dutton Juvenile Publishers, 1991).

This novice-mid to novice-high Spanish activity walks students through the questions needed to plan an imaginary trip using a travel agent. Students will learn words related to traveling as they practice speaking with each other about planning a vacation. Throughout the activity, students will be acting as travel agents and vacationers, switching roles. Each role will be given a pre-printed card to keep them on task and focused.  One of the travelers will have to “plan a vacation” with the travel agent using the specifications of their traveler card. The travel agent will have to choose the best place (from the options on the travel agent cards) that fits the traveler's needs. Once the travel agent offers a “plan” to the traveler, the traveler will become the travel agent, and they will “plan” another vacation. Students will wrap up the activity with a provided reflection questionnaire.

The linked cards specifically review vocabulary associated with nationalities and other countries. Each card features a full-color animal image along with the Spanish name for the featured animal. These cards include animals from the following ecosystems: Desert, Rain Forest, Ocean, and the Arctic. These animal cards can be used with novice low learners but the animals featured are those that upper-level students are more likely to encounter during environmental units (intermediate proficiency levels). Lower levels can use the cards to help students identify the words associated with each animal. Intermediate levels can have students each hold up a card and ask questions to a partner about the animal and the ecosystem it belongs to.

This intermediate-low to intermediate-high Spanish activity encourages students to push their vocabulary skills to the next level. Students play an interactive game in which they draw one of 30 topics and then spend 90 seconds writing down as many adjectives that they can associate with this topic. After 90 seconds, students compare notes. Students only receive points if no one else has a specific word. (Similar to the scoring in the game Scattergories.) If a word is duplicated in the classroom then no one gets the point for that word. This encourages students to recall less common words, a skill that will assist in improving their overall speaking and writing skills.

A google slideshow includes warm-up and post activity questions to assist in starting and ending the activity with a classroom discussion. Each student in the group has a specific role to ensure that a creative story is developed. Once finished they can pitch their show idea to their classmates. As an extension, they can create a commercial to share with their classmates. Teachers can easily connect this to any current thematic unit by changing the words students must choose from to reflect the vocabulary they are focusing on in class.
