With recent reports of high profile data breaches, ransomware attacks, and the prevalence of online trackers, it’s hard to know how best to protect your privacy online. In this Above the Noise video, we met up with the cybersecurity experts at Electronic Frontier Foundation to learn more about who’s snooping on us online and what we can do to protect ourselves. This video comes with a student handout that helps guide the discussion of this activity.

Students will define confirmation bias, motivated reasoning, and examine accuracy, perspective, credibility, and relevance in sources.  Through articles and an opportunity to research one side of a debate, students will consider how confirmation bias and motivated reasoning shape the way we respond to evidence presented in news and opinion pieces.

This TED-Ed learning activity guides students through the explanation and use of calories.

We hear about calories all the time: How many calories are in this cookie? How many are burned by doing 100 jumping jacks, or long-distance running, or fidgeting? But what is a calorie, really? And how many of them do we actually need? Emma Bryce explains how a few different factors should go into determining the recommended amount for each person.

In this lesson, students find a job for a character in a text they have read, prepare a resume for their character, and help them prepare for a job interview. Students first identify characteristics of effective resumes. After exploring an online introduction to writing a resume for a character, students search job ads for jobs that would be appropriate for a specific character from a text they have read. They then analyze that character, looking for direct and implied information about the character and textual evidence of the character's strengths and weaknesses. They work in small groups to write a resume for their character, based on their analysis. Finally, they explore interviewing tips and techniques and write ten job interview questions and accompanying answers designed to highlight the character's strengths.

Though the examples in this lesson focus on The Glass Menagerie, many other pieces of literature can be used.

Students will extend the My Favorite Things app they built in the previous lesson so that it now manages and displays a collection of images and responds to key events. Students are introduced to the practice of refactoring code in order to keep programs consistent and remove redundancies when adding new functionality. As part of learning to use key events, students are shown that event handlers pass a parameter which contains additional information about the event. This lesson also serves as further practice at using arrays in programs.

Students will be able to:
- use an array to maintain a collection of data in a program.
- create apps that allow user interaction through key events.
- refactor code in order to appropriately incorporate new functionality while maintaining readability and consistency.

In this video from KCPT, watch an animated demonstration of rotating and dilating a triangle on the coordinate plane. In the accompanying classroom activity, students watch the video; draw rotations and dilations of a triangle; and identify center of rotation, angle of rotation, and scale factors in classmates drawings. To get the most from the lesson, students should be comfortable graphing points on the coordinate plane and reproducing a drawing of a geometric shape at a different scale. Prior exposure to rotation and dilation is helpful.

This video lesson transitions students from reasoning concretely and contextually about quadratic functions to reasoning about their representations in ways that are more abstract and formal (MP2).

In earlier grades, students reasoned about multiplication by thinking of the product as the area of a rectangle where the two factors being multiplied are the side lengths of the rectangle. In this lesson, students use this familiar reasoning to expand expressions such as (x + 4)(x + 7), where x + 4, and x + 7 are side lengths of a rectangle with each side length decomposed into x and a number. They use the structure in the diagrams to help them write equivalent expressions in expanded form, for example, x2 + 11x + 28 (MP7). Students recognize that finding the sum of the partial areas in the rectangle is the same as applying the distributive property to multiply out the terms in each factor.

The terms “standard form” and “factored form” are not yet used and will be introduced in an upcoming lesson, after students have had some experience working with the expressions.

This video will explain how to identify components of quadratic functions and solve the function for each variable. 

Science fiction movies take it for granted that someday humans, or an alien race, will travel faster than the speed of light and build an intergalactic empire. Scientists aren't so sure that this is possible. It turns out that approaching the speed of light is very difficult. If Einstein's theories are correct, nothing that has mass can travel at the speed of light.

This informational material will apply a precalculus concept--limits of functions at infinity--to a well-known scientific theory--Einstein's theory of relativity. There is a video and links to additional information included.

This material will review what a conditional statement is because it is the foundation of the three related sentences that will be described later in the lesson. This material will help teachers and students to be familiar with the fundamental rules on how to convert or rewrite a conditional statement into its converse, inverse, and contrapositive. 

This online version of Suduko, the popular numbers game, provides a way for novice low German students to learn their numbers while practicing basic math skills. Instead of filling in the boxes with numerical characters, students are asked to write out the numbers needed to complete each puzzle square. The numbers that are pre-printed in the puzzle are also written out allowing students to easily memorize basic German numbers 1-9. Students can choose to play online or the teacher can print the screen to allow students to complete the activity offline.

This website is a detailed overview of muscles and muscle groups. By using the links, detailed exercises, stretches, and training notes are given. This would be a very helpful site for students as they are creating their own wellness and fitness plans. 

This novice high to intermediate low French activity allows students to gather information from four different heritage French speakers: Franck, J-C, Stephanie, and Virginie. Students are asked to gather information as the speakers describe what they did last weekend as well as when they were younger. This activity is split into two different sections and they can be used as a group or separately.  The links to the interviews used in this activity are posted in the comment section below. Each video provides optional French and English transcripts.

This novice low to novice mid activity introduces French students to the authentic resource, Paris Match. This online version of the popular magazine is much like People or Time magazine in the United States. Students are provided a printable PDF that keeps them on task as they search through the website looking for recognizable words and cognates. They start by examining the person featured on the current cover and are then asked to choose an article in which to look over and gather basic information, making inferences into what the article is about.

This website has a series of visuals that can be downloaded, printed, and displayed in the physical education gymnasium or class. These visuals range cover varying topics such as the FITT Principle, BORG Rating, and the Conflict Corner.

This resource explains a "Couch to 5K" program and what one must consider before attempting this training. This informational material gives great tips and suggestions for students to understand to be successful. Additionally, this site has links to a specific training program. 

This novice high to intermediate low Spanish activity allows students to use their creativity and cultural knowledge to create an invitation to a quinceañera. Students have the option to create their invitation digitally or physically. Through this activity, students will research clothing, gifts, locations, and other aspects of the quince celebration. Afterward, students will use presentational writing skills to present this information in a creative way. Students will then use past tense to describe what happened at the party. Using the provided rubric, students will be assessed on their creativity, grammar usage, vocabulary usage, and ability to include the cultural requirements.

This novice mid to novice high interactive activity requires students to comprehend a set of instructions written in the informal tú form. Students then present their own informal commands as they complete their posters. Over 30 unfinished poster printouts are included with this activity each fashioned after the popular "Stay Calm And...." posters. These should be placed around the room or throughout the school. Students will follow a set of teacher-prepared instructions written with informal commands in order to locate their posters. Once they are successful they are to return to the starting location and complete their poster for display in the classroom. 

This resource provides 21 separate video clips of French speakers, each of which illustrates how to use descriptions in conversation. Students use interpretive listening skills to identify main ideas and examine how descriptions enhance conversation through these authentic resources. The videos were prepared for intermediate and advanced level learners but could be used with novice learners as a way to introduce them to authentic language. Each video clip provides a French-language transcript and links to grammar reviews and activities for the concepts that are heard in the clip. The concepts covered include an introduction to adjectives; introduction to negations, gender, introduction to nouns, irregular adjectives, number - singular and plural, participles as adjectives, present tense, and relative pronouns.

This website offers direct links to a variety of Spanish language newspapers from the United States and around the globe. These authentic materials in the target language were published for Spanish speakers and provide lots of interpretative reading practice for students as they explore current events from the Latino world. Resources are well organized and provided from Argentina, Canary Islands, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela, Spain, the United States and more.

Dihydrogen monoxide (better known as water) is the key to nearly everything. It falls from the sky, makes up 60% of our bodies, and just about every chemical process related to life takes place with it or in it. Without it, none of the chemical reactions that keep us alive would happen, none of the reactions that sustain any life form on earth would happen, and the majority of inorganic chemical reactions that shape the surface of the earth would not happen either. Every one of us uses water for all kinds of chemistry every day--our body chemistry, our food chemistry, and our laundry chemistry all take place in water. Stoichiometry is the relationship between the relative quantities of substances taking part in a reaction or forming a compound, typically a ratio of whole integers. Chemists need stoichiometry to make the scale of chemistry more understandable. In this video, Hank is here to explain why and to teach us how to use it.
