In this lesson, students complete two prewriting activities, one on brainstorming ideas using story maps, and one on creating the beginnings of stories. They then work on two collaborative-writing activities in which they draft an "oversized" story on chart paper. Before starting the activities, the teacher reads aloud the first few sentences from a variety of children's books that have unusual, exciting, or particularly descriptive openings. Each student works individually to read what has been written before, adds the "next sentence," and passes the developing story on to another student. The story is passed from student to student until the story is complete. In a later lesson Collaborative Stories 2: Revising, the story is revised by the groups.

In this video lesson, students recall one way of understanding equivalent expressions, that is, the expressions have the same value for any number substituted for a variable. Then they use properties they have learned to write an equivalent expression using fewer terms. Students informally practice combining like terms, though the language is not yet introduced.

In this video lesson, students are working toward gaining fluency in writing equivalent expressions. The goal of this lesson is to highlight a particularly common error: mishandling the subtraction in an expression like 8–3(4+9x). To this end, students first analyze and explain the error in several incorrect ways of rewriting this expression. Then, they consider the effect of inserting parentheses in different places in an expression with four terms.

2020 Arkansas Teacher of the Year, Joel Lookadoo, shows students ways to better understand math. In this episode, Joel teaches students to compare equations by using number lines and tens sticks. He encourages students to visually represent the equations to have a better understanding of how the equations compare. Accompanying this video is a worksheet that provides students the opportunity to practice comparing equations.

In this video lesson, students investigate how quantities that grow quadratically compare to those that grow exponentially. They discover the reason that increasing exponential functions also eventually surpass increasing quadratic functions. By examining successive quotients for each type of function, students see that the outputs of quadratic functions are not multiplied by the same factor each time the input increases by one. In fact, these successive quotients get smaller as the inputs increase, while the outputs of the exponential function have the same multiplier. As they compare the two types of functions, they develop their understanding of quadratic expressions and how the shape of the graph differs between the two types of functions.

In this video lesson, students learn that completing the square can be used to solve any quadratic equation, including equations that involve rational numbers that are not integers. Students notice that the process of completing the square is the same when the equations involve messier numbers as when they have simple integers, but the calculations may be more time consuming and prone to error. An error-analysis activity highlights some common errors related to completing the square.

Completing the square for quadratic expressions that are more elaborate encourages students to look for and make use of the same structure that helped them when they were working with less complicated expressions (MP7).

In this resource, students connect new information to personal experiences which helps learners comprehend and clarify their responses to literature. Learners can apply and accommodate vocabulary and meanings they already understand to new situations and concepts. Students make connections between a video about bees and their own personal experiences through a poem written for two voices.
Students share personal experiences they have had with bees. They then watch a video clip about handling bee hives and wearing a beard of bees. They respond to the video by connecting their response to personal experiences through a poem for two voices.

In this lesson, students are asked to share certain numbers of objects among different numbers of people. They begin with unit fractions and move to divide multiple objects (a) among multiple people, (b) in which a < b, to produce fractions less than one. This CYBERCHASE activity is motivated by two video clips in which the CyberSquad has to share objects fairly in order to overcome obstacles and challenges assigned to them by Zeus as they try to recover Pandora's Box, which was stolen by their nemesis, Hacker.

Just like real ducks, cyberducks migrate from one region to another to find a warm place to live with plenty of good food and water. The flock needs to avoid obstacles and manage their energy while migrating to Restoria. The player’s mission is to work with the ducks to help them get to Restoria safely and find the best ponds to stop at along the way.
