This is a free resource from the National Council for Open Education. Physical fitness not only produces higher self-esteem, but it also reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease. Not to mention that working out is a great way to relieve stress. This lesson will teach the students how being physically fit can help them live a more positive life. To help students feel better about themselves and their abilities, and to help the students become more physically fit, the students will record their physical activity for one month. They will be required to take part in a minimum of three vigorous physical activities per week. The students will compare and contrast the way they feel about themselves before and after this month long project. The students will list three reasons why being physically fit is important to them.

This is a dribbling activity that focuses on students dribbling with their head up. Dribbling without looking at the ball shows mastery of the skill because students are in control of the ball. Also when students dribble with their head up, they have full court vision and can easily see open space or other players to pass to. Players who can dribble with their head up can also see where they are going and avoid defenders.

Set up a Knee Ping Pong court by using the floor tape to mark off a 3' wide by 6' long rectangular area along the gym floor. Use one color floor tape for the two 6' long sidelines and use the second colored floor tape to mark the two 3' backcourt lines. This free resource from ShareMyLesson is a football unit. This unit offers 10 lessons on throwing and catching a football, punting a football, how to pull flags, how to move into space playing keep away and playing small sided games of flag football. The unit was designed for 7th graders but could also be used for 6th or 8th graders. It has a group project to allow students to learn about football through research on the internet and creating a power point presentation to present to the class. The lessons allow plenty of time for students to practice and learn the skills and offers a game for the students that have achieved mastery of the skills. The unit plan does allow for a fitness or mile day and includes assessments for throwing, catching and punting a football.
