Overview

This learning activity will explain the meaning of the signals used in the sport of football. The resource, Football Signals, will show how to communicate the infraction or play to the fans, players, and coaches. The students will watch the Alabama vs. Auburn game to learn the procedures.

    Learning Objectives

    The student will study and learn hand signals used to officiate football.

    Students will translate the hand signals during the second quarter of the Alabama vs. Auburn football game.

    Activity Details

    The students will first use the Football Signals page while watching the first quarter of a football game. The teacher can use the link, Alabama vs. Auburn. The teacher can pause the video and solicit questions about the hand signals. After the first quarter, the teacher can ask the students if they have any questions or concerns. The teacher will allow the students to practice with a partner. The student will watch the second quarter of the Alabama vs. Auburn game without sound and give a translation of the signals that are used by the officials. The students will not be able to use the Football Signals sheet.

    The teacher will assess students’ translation of signals by checking for accuracy using the Football Signals sheet. 

    Variation Tips

    The teacher may allow students to watch other football games to practice and learn the hand signals.

    Background and Preparation

    Background / Preparation

    In preparing for the activity, the teacher will need to print the Football Signals sheet for each student. The teacher will need to prepare for a projector or large television so that all can see.
