In this lesson, students will use the concept of finding the probability of an offspring having more than one genetic trait simultaneously. They will use a shortcut method to find the probability and they will use a Punnett square calculator to check their answers. This lesson can be used to teach genetics in a science classroom or a practical "real world" application of probability calculations in a math classroom.

The teacher will introduce students to the word syllable and demonstrate to students how to count syllables in words using the digital tool. Next, the teacher will read a haiku poem to students and have the students count the syllables in the haiku using the strategy demonstrated in the video clip. Lastly, the teacher and students will read a variety of haiku poems, with the teacher encouraging the students to identify the syllable pattern in each poem using non-locomotor movements. The students will use mental math to calculate the number of syllables present in each line of a haiku poem and describe how this pattern supplies rhythm in a haiku.

This read-aloud will engage students and get them thinking about grouping hundreds, tens, and singles to make numbers. The students in Earth Day Hooray! have the challenge to collect 5,000 aluminum cans. At the end of each day, they have to add to their previous totals. They do this by adding hundreds first, then tens, and then the ones. The teacher will stop the video after each day and ask questions that will make the students mentally add and subtract numbers.
