Area and Perimeter Scavenger Hunt

Subject Area

Mathematics

Grade(s)

Overview

In this learning activity the students will be using different amounts of color tiles to discover rectangles that have the same area but different perimeter, have the same perimeter but a different area and have the same area and same perimeter.

    Mathematics (2019) Grade(s): 3

    MA19.3.24

    Vocabulary

    • Perimeter
    • Area
    • Side length
    • Side measure

    Knowledge

    Students know:
    • Perimeter is a measurable attribute of rectangles.
    • Area is a measurable attribute of rectangles.

    Skills

    Students are able to:
    • Construct rectangles with a given perimeter.
    • Construct rectangles with a given area.
    • Construct rectangles with the same perimeters but differing areas.
    • Construct rectangles with the same areas but differing perimeters.

    Understanding

    Students understand that:
    • Perimeter and area are measurable attributes of rectangles.
    • Perimeter is the distance around a figure found by adding side lengths.
    • The area of a plane figure is measured by the number of square units that cover the interior space of the rectangle.

    Learning Objectives

I can construct rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas or the same area and different perimeters.

    Activity Details

The teacher will display the directions for the activity Area and Perimeter Scavenger Hunt. The students will work with partners or groups to build rectangles. The activity directions are as follows:

    1.  Choose either 14, 16, 20, or 24 tiles.
    2.  Make a rectangular shape with those tiles.
    3.  Record your area and perimeter.

    Your task:

    1. Build rectangles with the same area but different perimeters.
    2. Build rectangles with the same perimeter but different areas.
    3. Build rectangles with the same area and same perimeter.
    Assessment Strategies

    Assessment Strategies

Teachers will observe student responses to determine student understanding of the concept and skill. You can use the following guidelines to ensure students meet the learning objective.

    Check that the student:

    1. can use the color tiles to find all the ways to arrange the number of tiles selected.
    2. can identify rectangles with the same area but different perimeters.
    3. can identify rectangles with the same perimeter but different areas.
    4. can identify rectangles with the same area and same perimeter.

    Variation Tips

This activity can be used in a small group setting to remediate area and perimeter with struggling learners.
