This engaging learning activity will allow students to compare two two-digit numbers based on meanings of the tens and ones digits and record the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, and <.  The students will enjoy using the mathematical understanding of place value using dice to create numbers. The students will use mathematical reasoning to decide if the numbers are greater than, less than or equal to. This activity makes comparing numbers fun!

Students will explore sounds using plastic cups and rubber bands to simulate a stringed instrument. Students will experiment with the vibration of sounds by plucking the bands and listening to the sounds. They will change the string’s tension and gauge to create different pitches. Students will learn to write simple code for robots to read. Students will use blue, black, red, and green markers to write their names on a blank sheet of paper. Students will use robots to trace their written names. Students will experiment with writing their names in various colors, noting how different color combinations prompt the robot to move differently.

Google Drawings is a tool that allows students to be creative in sharing what they know. Students will use Google Drawings to create a word cloud of words chosen by the teacher. Students will create culturally inspired artwork to be displayed in a local business. For example, students learning Spanish will create unique works of art inspired by the culture of Mexico to be displayed in Mexican restaurants in their community. Students will also learn simple vocabulary and useful phrases to be able to communicate in the target language when visiting Mexican restaurants. Throughout the lesson, the students will be exposed to cognates and “borrowed words” to help them begin comparing and contrasting the target language with the English language.

In this particular connect the dots, students are counting by ones from the number 21 to 40.
