In this authentic learning task students are designing a rectangular patio using 40 patio stones. This task will have many answers, but students will choose the design they like best. Students will use that design to determine the perimeter in part two of the problem.

In this learning activity the students will be using different amounts of color tiles to discover rectangles that have the same area but different perimeter, have the same perimeter but a different area and have the same area and same perimeter.

The students will watch the Adding and Subtracting Vectors video to learn how to add and subtract vectors. This activity will lead to learning how to add vectors end-to-end, component-wise, and by the parallelogram rule, determine the direction of their sum, represent vector subtraction graphically by connecting the tips in the appropriate order, and perform vector subtraction component-wise.

In this learning activity, students are introduced to the concept of adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers through an animated free math video from GCFLearnFree.org. In the video, a bird demonstrates how to move up and down the number line based on the operation and integers in the equation. It is a clever way to remember which direction to move based on the positive and negative numbers in the equation. Students then practice the tricks they learned using an interactive game.

Students will be introduced to arrays in this second-grade engagement activity. As students examine real-world examples of arrays, they will use terms such as rows and columns to describe the array. In a whole group discussion, the teacher will use student observations to highlight the different attributes of arrays that make them a useful model for repeated addition.

In this learning activity, students will make a comparison of Deviations – Mean Absolute vs. Standard – 

This learning activity allows a brief review of the Mean Absolute Deviation compared to the Standard Deviation. The expectation is for the students to understand they are related.

In this learning activity, the students will be reminded that in simple addition they learned to add all the numbers together to get a sum. In algebra, numbers are sometimes attached to variables. The students will learn that they need to make sure that the variables are alike before they can add the numbers. This learning activity can be used as a stand-alone activity but is best used as an introductory activity. Corresponding activities are available.

In this activity, students will compute real-world problems involving the volume of rectangular prisms. Students are provided models of rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths and asked to compute how many smaller prims with a given measure are needed to pack the model. They will compute volume measurements using two different methods. Students are provided a link to an online rectangular prism calculator to check their calculations. An answer key with detailed explanations is provided for this activity.

This learning activity is a great way to add high interest in grade 1, and with variations could be used in grades 2, 4, and 5. In grade 1, it can be used after the study of adding and subtracting within 100, identifying tens and ones, modeling place value, composing, decomposing two-digit numbers, communicating the relationship between models and numerical representations, and basic computer skills. The activity could be used in grades 2, 4, or 5 to reinforce and practice operations with numbers in base ten. This activity can be completed as a partner or independent activity or assessment.

This activity is a task designed to introduce addition with three addends. The students use counters to represent the problem and begin developing an understanding of the commutative and associative properties of addition.

In this elaborate activity, students will independently solve metric measurement word problems involving length. The students will combine the same length (10 cm.) multiple times. Students will use strategies based on place value and the properties of operation to add within 1,000. The students will use drawings or equations to explain their strategy.

This engaging learning activity will allow students to compare two two-digit numbers based on meanings of the tens and ones digits and record the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, and <.  The students will enjoy using the mathematical understanding of place value using dice to create numbers. The students will use mathematical reasoning to decide if the numbers are greater than, less than or equal to. This activity makes comparing numbers fun!

In this interactive math learning activity from Math is Fun, students learn to solve multiplying fractions in 3 simple steps: multiply tops, multiply bottoms, and simplify. Students are able to watch a short video (16 seconds) demonstrating how to multiply fractions. They are given an example of a model and pen and paper solution for solving an equation and presented with a rhyme to help students remember the three steps for multiplying fractions.
