This learning activity focuses on the previously taught volleyball skills of setting, forearm pass, and overhand/underhand serving. Students will break off into partners around the gym. Place playing cards face down on the floor in places that are easily accessed by students on either side of the net but are out of the playing area. On the teacher's signal, the activity begins. The partner without the ball will go draw a playing card and bring it back to their partner. Each type of card stands for an activity: Spades - underhand/overhand serve, Clubs - overhead set, Diamonds - forearm pass, Hearts - any exercise (jumping jacks, push-ups, etc.). After a designated amount of time, rotate partners.

Handball can be played with any kind of bouncing ball on practically any kind of wall. The United States Handball Association promotes “any ball, any wall” in teaching. Teachers are encouraged to use any available equipment and space. Handball can be taught as a unit for the entire class in the gymnasium or used as a station activity in one section of the gym. There is no need for regulation-sized courts in a gymnasium. Cones and floor tape work well to mark playing spaces and boundaries.

The following lesson plans for teaching handball in middle and secondary schools have been written for grades 6-12. Court size and distances (from the wall when hitting a ball) can easily be adjusted to match the developmental levels of learners.

In an effort to achieve the success that we all want for players and programs, the Alabama High School Athletic Association is committed to educating and promoting the concept of sportsmanship. Therefore, we have taken the initiative to create a Sportsmanship Manual to serve as a guide on our journey to becoming a model state high school athletic association. This manual contains valuable information and should serve as a key reference not only in planning for the upcoming athletic year but as a refresher of sportsmanship principles and practices all year round. To improve good sportsmanship, everyone needs to adhere to the policies in the manual.

A basic belief underlying The Responsive Classroom approach to teaching is that how children learn to treat one another is as important as what they learn in reading, writing, and arithmetic. We believe that social skills such as cooperation, assertion, responsibility, empathy, and self-control are essential to children’s academic and social success and we emphasize the teaching of these skills, along with academics, throughout the school day.

This resource provides teachers with classroom strategies to build community, improve communication, and enhance classroom discussion. This resource also has a listing of professional books related to these topics.

In this activity, students will practice jumping rope starting with making big wheels with their arms first. Students will start by placing their arms out in front of them and making big circles with their arms in a big wheel or "windmill" fashion. This will extend the full ROM of the shoulder joint. Students will then bend their knees each time they see their hands pass their eyes. Students will continue to do this an add a jump to the movement. Students will then get a jump rope that fits them appropriately, by holding the handles and stepping on the middle of the rope. The rope should be between the shoulders and underarms. You can tie knots in the rope if the rope is too long. Students will toss the rope from behind the heels to the front of the body and then jump over the rope (jumping rope).

This activity is designed to show students how difficult it can be to make healthy food choices and to help them understand the nutritional information available for a variety of foods. This activity can be done at the start of a nutrition unit. It was developed after the author realized that many students had no idea how to make good food choices or how to interpret nutritional information. Many students are keen to adopt or maintain a healthy active lifestyle, yet neglect to ensure that they are eating from all the food groups and that they are consuming nutritious food that is beneficial to them.

In this activity, students are in circle formation, facing in. Each stands in a wide straddle stance with the side of the foot against the neighbor's. The hands are on the knees. Two balls are used. The object of the game is to roll one of the balls between the legs of another player before he can get his hands down to stop the ball. Each time a ball goes between the legs of an individual, a point is scored. The players having the fewest points scored against them are the winners. Keep the circles small so students have more opportunities to handle the ball. Players must catch and roll the ball, rather than batting it. Children must keep their hands on their knees until a ball is rolled at them.
