Learning Activities

This activity provides resources meant to engage and inform students about the importance of teamwork in everyday life as well as academic life. Students will be shown a short video to spark a discussion about the benefits of working collaboratively with fellow peers to accomplish a goal. Students will communicate key ideas from their discussion using a digital tool selected by the teacher.

During this learning activity, students will solve a quality task that allows students to find the product of a given problem using equal grouping. Cookie Monster needs help counting the number of cookies he is baking for the school's bake sale. Students will first build the problem using counters then solve the problem and write the multiplication expression that matches what they built. 

Students will watch a recording of Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes sound story.  They will respond to the chosen instruments and important words/phrases that were played.

This activity will introduce students to computer hardware and software. Students will explore the similarities and differences between the two. The video shown in this activity will provide the "hook" for the associated during activity.

This activity should be used as extra practice or an assessment after students have already been introduced to measuring with a ruler and line plots. In this learning activity, students will measure the lengths of pencils to the nearest half-inch and record the data on a line plot. 

Students listen to a book about a jackrabbit that wishes for horns so that he can be fierce. After listening to the read aloud, the students discuss animal adaptations for survival, including physical characteristics, habitat, and diet.

Students will create, read, and listen to four-beat rhythm ostinato patterns using quarter notes, quarter rests, pairs of eighth notes, and four sixteenth notes at various tempos. As the students interact with the game, they will practice reading and composing four-beat rhythm patterns and experience the tempos largo, andante, allegro, and presto.

The teacher will use the attached Interactive Google Slide Presentation to introduce and explain to students the difference between the first and third-person points of view in literary texts. Within the Google Slide, there are examples of narrator vs. character point of view with the use of movie clips to introduce the topic. The Google Slides explain both points of view and allow for interactive practice as a whole group or small group to discuss the differences between the first and third-person points of view.

This is an instant activity for classes to engage in full body warm up while gearing up for the main lesson for the day. The students will work independently using locomotor skills and various exercises while maintaining personal space. This is a super easy setup and no equipment is needed. The activity card can be displayed on a screen or printed to hang on the wall.

In this activity, students will collaborate in groups to create a dance phrase using their Keith Haring Dancing Drawings as a picture map. 

This activity is to follow Keith Haring Dancing Drawings.

Students will assign a sequence to their Keith Haring Dancing Drawings for their choreography. They will give each of their drawings four counts before moving to the next pose.

In this activity, the teacher will introduce students to the video, "What Is a Syllable?" The teacher will discuss the different syllable patterns; closed, open, silent e, vowel team, r-controlled, and consonant-le. The teacher will explain how knowing the different syllable types help you know where words are divided. The teacher will use the Google Document, What Does the Syllable Part Spell? to help students to see the syllable division in multisyllabic words.

Students will listen to a read-aloud of One Hundred Hungry Ants by Elinor J. Pinczes to activate their thinking about division. Essential questions will help scaffold student prior knowledge.

After watching How Computers Work: Hardware and Software, students will gain an understanding of the difference between hardware and software by experts from Amazon, Xbox, and Microsoft. Students will complete the worksheet "What is the difference between hardware and software?" as they watch/listen to the video. Students will develop open-ended questions regarding hardware and software that they want to know more about.

Students will read about the life cycle of a butterfly and moth. Students will discuss the unique characteristics of each stage of the life cycle. Students will then use algorithms to code robots through the various stages of the life cycle of a butterfly.

In this activity, students will engage in a shared reading of the poem, "The Snowbird's Song," annotating the text to identify phrases, rhythm, rhyme, and areas to apply a meaningful expression.

The teacher will talk about the history of Cinco de Mayo (who, what, where, when, why). The teacher will read Marco’s Cinco de Mayo by Lisa Bullard. The teacher will teach the students the Mexican Hat Dance.

This learning activity is a great introductory activity that allows the students to build equal groups using arrays. Students will build designs of desk arrangements in a classroom using counters or unifix cubes. Students must take 24 desks and divide them into equal groups to create a classroom desk arrangement. Students will write a multiplication and division equation for each arrangement. This will help students see the relationship between multiplication and division.

This learning activity should be used during a lesson or unit on variations in characteristics among individuals of the same species. Students will use various tools to replicate bird beaks and decide which one works best for each food type and situation.

Students will compose a song in rondo form. They will collaborate with a group of peers in the creating of the song. They will then perform the song for their class.

Students will create a 16-count dance that communicates and describes a character in a story. Students will base their dance on a character's traits.

During this learning activity, students will solve a real-life task that allows students to create an array to find the total number of rows of chairs needed at a music concert. Students will write multiplication and division equations and solve them to complete the music concert task. This activity will help students see the relationship between multiplication and division.

This digital tool will challenge students to show their mastery of fluently multiplying and dividing within 100 by using their knowledge of the relationship between multiplication and division. Students have the option of three different challenge modes.

This learning activity should be used at the end of a word study/phonics lesson. In this learning activity, students will use their knowledge of phoneme-grapheme correspondences to write a short story about their favorite animal (or any topic chosen by the teacher).

This learning activity should be used as an assessment activity that allows students to explain their thinking to solve problems involving equal groups for multiplication. Students will solve an equal groups multiplication word problem illustrating their thinking. They will then have to defend their answer on an extension problem. 

Students will choose a haiku to create a sound story.  They will add rhythm instruments to represent important words in the haiku.  The students will perform their haiku and sound story accompaniment for the class.

Students will utilize new academic, content-specific, grade-level vocabulary including seeds, germination, roots and stems, leaves, flowers, and pollination to make connections to the life cycle of a plant. The students will use grade-level text to determine the meaning and order of each step of the plant life cycle. Students will independently create a plant life cycle wheel by ordering the steps of the life cycle of a plant, defining each word in their own words, and creating an illustration.

This is an introductory activity for teaching perimeter. First, students will watch a perimeter song video. Then, they will work with manipulatives to build a garden (array) and discuss what the measurement would be if a ladybug walked around the edge of the garden. This gives the students an opportunity to explore the perimeter using concrete materials. 

The students will work as a team to accurately answer the question posed. Students must agree on the answer, gather the letters needed to spell it, and arrange themselves so that they hold the letters in order and right side up. The first group to correctly answer is awarded the point(s) for that question. This review game requires communication, collaboration, and creativity and can easily be adapted to any subject area.

Students will use Google Drawings to create an infographic describing why an organism is classified as a living thing. 

This learning activity was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science University, GEMS-U Project.

The teacher will show a video to introduce students to first-person and third-person points of view. The video will help students identify what perspective a story is being told using the help of pronouns.  Then the students will identify first-person and third-person narration with the help of pronouns in two similar stories and record them on a point of view T-Chart. An anchor chart is included with this activity.

This is an instant activity for classes to engage in full body warm up. The activity is geared for students to work cooperatively while warming up for the main lesson for the day. This is an easy set up to use and move out of the way for other class activities. The activity card can be displayed on a screen or printed to give each group. The only set up needed is the activity card and a deck of cards.

Students will construct hanging mobiles in the style of Alexander Calder using coat hangers and assorted materials while exploring the principles of balanced and unbalanced forces.

The students will listen to a read-aloud of "The True Story of the Three Little Pigs," and jot down opinion sentences they hear as they listen. They will learn how to write strong introductions and conclusions for their paragraphs. They will write a paragraph summarizing the wolf's opinions in the book.
