Overview

The teacher will talk about the history of Cinco de Mayo (who, what, where, when, why). The teacher will read Marco’s Cinco de Mayo by Lisa Bullard. The teacher will teach the students the Mexican Hat Dance.

This activity was created as a result of the World Languages COS Resource Development Summit.

    The student can identify the typical activities of Cinco de Mayo.

    Activity Details

    The teacher will show pictures of Mexico's Cinco de Mayo celebrations and ask the students what they think it may be. The teacher can show pictures of papel picado, sombreros, traditional clothing, the Mexican flag, etc. As a class, the students and the teacher can create a K-W-L chart about Mexico and the Cinco de Mayo celebration. Using the book, Marco’s Cinco de Mayo by Lisa Bullard, the teacher will teach about the history and celebrations of Cinco de Mayo. The students and teacher will then revisit the K-W-L chart to see if their questions were answered and record what they learned. Then, the teacher will share the Mexican Hat Dance video with the students. The students can learn the dance from the videos provided or the teacher can teach the students.

    The teacher will ask the question “What do you see on Cinco de Mayo?” The students can describe activities that take place, food, colors, songs, etc.
