What Makes a Fairy Tale? Part 2

Overview

In this activity, students will demonstrate knowledge of the features of a fairy tale.  Students will listen to the story The Three Little Pigs by James Marshall.   After listening to the story, students will apply knowledge of fairy tale features using a fairy tale checklist and a graphic organizer.

    1.  Students will be able to recall key features of a fairy tale. 

    2.  Students will use the features of a fairy tale to determine if a story is a fairy tale.

    Activity Details

    1.  Teacher will give each student a copy of the Fairy Tale Checklist and review features of a fairy tale.

    2.  Students will be active listeners during the story, The Three Little Pigs by James Marshall;  listening for key features of a fairy tale. 

    3.  Student will apply knowledge by marking each feature on the Fairy Tale Checklist when they hear it in the story.

    4.  After listening to the story, together with whole group, teacher will complete the Fairy Tale Features Graphic Organizer on the Interactive Whiteboard.  The teacher will question students for answers to complete the graphic organizer. 

    Assessment Strategies

    Assessment Strategies

    The teacher will make sure students have checked all of the characteristics on their checklist.  The teacher will also evaluate students’ understanding through the class discussion of checklist criteria and graphic organizer.

    Acceleration

    Advanced students can read or listen to the book independently.    

    Intervention

    In a small group, read the story together and complete the checklist. 

    Variation Tips

    Fairy Tale Checklist can be used with any fairy tale.

    Background and Preparation

    Background / Preparation

    Teacher Preparation:  

    Teacher should cue read-aloud and graphic organizer to ensure it is working and solve any technical issues.  Also, teacher should make copies of the checklist and cut apart so each student has one checklist.

    Student preparation:

    Students should be familiar with features of a fairy tale.
