Artificial Intelligence/Science and Star Wars

Learning Resource Type

Learning Activity

Subject Area

Digital Literacy and Computer Science

Grade(s)

6

Overview

In this learning activity, students learn about artificial intelligence and how it is being used in real-world applications. They are introduced to IBM's Watson and watch Star Wars footage as they are reminded of creative ways artificial intelligence has been used in movies. Students are asked to brainstorm ways they use artificial intelligence in their daily activities.

Phase

Before/Engage
Digital Literacy and Computer Science (2018) Grade(s): 6

DLCS18.6.29

Define artificial intelligence and identify examples of artificial intelligence in the community.

UP:DLCS18.6.29

Vocabulary

  • artificial intelligence

Knowledge

Students know:
  • that artificial intelligence is the use of computer systems to perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence and include services such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision
  • making, and translation between languages.

Skills

Students are able to:
  • identify examples of artificial intelligence.

Understanding

Students understand that:
  • while artificial intelligence is designed to aide, it also has negative side effects.

Learning Objectives

The student will define artificial intelligence and identify examples of artificial intelligence in their daily lives.

Activity Details

This should be used as an introduction to artificial intelligence.

  1. Before class, the teacher will provide access to an internet-enabled device for all students.
  2. The teacher will begin the lesson by explaining that in the real world students will encounter a variety of devices that use artificial intelligence.
  3. The teacher will explain that students may be familiar with some devices/computers/robots that use artificial intelligence from movies. One movie they might recognize is Star Wars. The teacher will show the video Artificial Intelligence/Science/and Star Wars.
  4. After watching the video, ask the students to brainstorm ways they use artificial intelligence every day.
  5. Have students visit Free Word Cloud Generator.
  6. Using the word cloud generator, students will make a word cloud using keywords to define artificial intelligence and include words that describe different ways they use artificial intelligence every day.
  7. Word clouds can be shared by printing and posting around the room.
  8. Students can do a carousel walk around the room to view all of the word clouds that have been created.

Assessment Strategies

The students can be assessed on the word cloud activity. Students should use words to describe artificial intelligence.

Variation Tips

Students can complete the word cloud generator independently, with partners, or in small groups.

Background / Preparation

  • The teacher will need to watch the video prior to showing it in the classroom to make sure it will not be blocked by school security.
  • The teacher will need to bookmark or share the link to the word cloud generator site through a management system such as Google Classroom.
  • The teacher will need to have post-it notes available.
