Overview

Students will evaluate and submit the paragraph they drafted in the associated during learning activity. They will engage in peer review using the class-generated checklist to ensure that they have utilized best research and writing practices. This activity is the culminating activity for the activity sets associated with standards ELA21.9.24 and ELA21.10.24.

    • The student will utilize responsible and ethical research practices to write clear, coherent products with a command of language suitable for a particular target audience and purpose.
    • The student will participate in a peer review process to revise and edit their writing.

    Activity Details

    1. The teacher will assign students to pairs or groups of three for peer review. 
    2. Students will use their class checklist to peer review paragraphs.
    3. The teacher will allow time for the students to conference with each other, explain their reviews, and make suggestions for improvement. 
    4. Students will revise their paragraphs and submit them for teacher assessment.

    Assessment Strategies

    • The teacher will evaluate student participation in the peer review process.
    • The teacher will evaluate the student’s final writing product using the checklist. 

    Acceleration

    Students may create a presentation or add digital images to accompany their written product. 

     

     

    Intervention

    • Students may dictate their sentences for their final draft to a partner or a teacher. 
    • Instead of an in-class peer review, students may work with a resource teacher or a student from their school’s peer tutor program.

    The teacher should have taught the associated activities on responsible and ethical research practicesclear, coherent writing for audience and purpose; and the prewriting and drafting activities related to this learning activity. The teacher will need to decide how to pair or group students for peer review, whether students will use a digital or printed checklist, and how students will submit their final paragraphs for teacher assessment.
