Learning Activities

In this activity, the teacher will present students with the video Partitioning Circles and Rectangles. The teacher will introduce and define the math terms whole, equal shares, partition, halves (half of), thirds (third of), and fourths (fourth of). The teacher will use the Google Slide presentation to build and activate students' background/prior knowledge of circles, and rectangles while expanding students' knowledge of the math terms.

The Illuminations tool, Product Game, is an excellent resource for students to gain a deeper understanding of factors and multiples. This tool challenges students to make offensive and defensive moves to obtain four products in a row by selecting factors ranging from one to nine. The challenge comes when one of the factors must be from your opponent’s last move. Students can either play against the computer or with a partner in their class.

Students will work through a Desmos activity on Normal Distribution. They will be reminded of how to find the mean of a data set. The process of finding the standard deviation of a set of data values will be introduced. Students will practice doing both calculations. Next, using the mean and standard deviation they will define the intervals in a normal curve and will approximate the percentage of items in each interval using the Empirical Rule.

This activity guides students through the process of creating a graph of a particular data set. Students can produce a bar graph that compares different categories, a line graph that shows a change in something over time, or a pie graph that shows percentages of a whole. Students will select the most appropriate graph choice, input data, create labels and titles, and make design choices to enhance the graphic representation of the data.

This learning activity is a free interactive fraction game from Math Games that will give students the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of multiplying a whole number by a fraction. Students will be asked a series of word problems involving multiplying a whole number by a fraction. Some questions will have multiple choice answers and some will require a free-response. There are four different levels of the game. Students advance each level based on the number of correct questions answered. This activity should be used at the end of a lesson on multiplying a whole number by a fraction to assess mastery of the standard.
