Overview

This learning activity defines parts of the standard so that students may begin to understand how to apply these criteria to their writing. By viewing a slideshow, students will learn about criteria that make writing clear, coherent, and suitable for a specific audience and purpose. A quick check for understanding follows the slideshow.

Learning Objectives

The student will recognize the characteristics of clear, coherent writing for audience and purpose.

Activity Details

  1. Using Slide 1, the teacher will review the standard with students.
  2. The teacher may ask students how they would define clear and coherent.
  3. Using Slides 2 and 3, the teacher will show students characteristics of clear and coherent writing. 
  4. The teacher may ask students what kind of audiences they may write for. 
  5. Using Slide 4, the teacher will show students questions that students may ask when determining how to write for their audience. 
  6. The teacher may ask students for what purposes they write. 
  7. Using Slide 5, the teacher will share questions that students may ask when determining the purpose of their writing. 

The teacher may administer the assessment using the Google Form or another online assessment tool.

Assessment Strategies

The teacher may assess the students’ ability to recognize characteristics of clear, coherent writing for audience and purpose by administering the short quiz on Google Forms.

Acceleration

Accelerated students may practice writing sample sentences that demonstrate the characteristics listed in each slide. 

 

 

Intervention

Students may be provided with a copy of the slideshow with keywords highlighted.  They may also use the information on the slideshow while completing the check for understanding. 

Background / Preparation

Teacher Preparation:  Teachers should preview the slideshow and assessment. The teacher may decide to use the Form provided for assessment or use an online formative assessment tool such as Mentimeter or Kahoot.

Student Preparation:  No prerequisite skills are required.
