Overview

Prior to this activity, students will have obtained information from audio sources. In this activity, students will use details from the audio sources to defend a position statement. They will share the information obtained within a group of three students and defend the position statement using the evidence gathered from the audio sources. They will also discuss within their group the difference in using audio sources instead of print sources to obtain information.

Learning Objectives

Students will defend a position using information gathered from an audio source.

Activity Details

  1. Students will answer the following prompt on the note-taking handout: Defend your position statement with TWO statements from each audio source. Students should use the provided parenthetical citation to appropriately attribute the information. 
  2. The teacher will assign students to groups of three. 
  3. Students will share their position statements and two pieces of evidence that support the position statement. 
  4. Within their groups, students will discuss the following prompt from the note-taking document: How was gathering information from an audio source different from gathering information from a print source?
  5. Students will fill in their group’s answers to the question in the appropriate row of their document. 

Assessment Strategies

Teachers will evaluate the students’ note-taking document to determine whether they have listed useful information from the audio sources to defend the position statement.

Accelerated students may share information from additional sources to defend their position. 

 

 

Intervention

  • Students who need intervention may work in a group with the teacher to defend their position.

Teacher Preparation:

The teacher should have presented the associated activity on Gathering Information Using Audio Sources. The teacher should decide how to group students in threes and determine group protocols. 

Student Preparation:

The students should have completed the associated activity on Gathering Information Using Audio Sources, including the note-taking document on audio sources. They should be aware of group work protocols.
