Overview

This Operations with Scientific Notation Practice Problems Quizizz game has 23 questions to test the understanding of performing operations with numbers expressed in scientific notation, including problems where both decimal and scientific notation are used, and is intended to be used as an assessment activity. Quizizz allows the teacher to conduct student-paced formative assessments through quizzing, collaboration, peer-led discussions, and presentation of content in a fun and engaging way for students of all ages.

(This learning activity can be used as a stand-alone activity but is best used as an After Activity.)

Phase

After/Explain/Elaborate
Mathematics (2019) Grade(s): 7 - Grade 7 Accelerated

MA19.7A.16

Express and compare very large or very small numbers in scientific notation. [Grade 8, 5]

UP:MA19.7A.16

Vocabulary

  • Multiplicative relationship
  • Scientific Notation

Knowledge

Students know:
  • That scientific notation is formed using base ten system and is the reason a 10 is used as the base number.
  • Raising or lowering an exponent is has an effect on the place value of the decimal expansion.
  • That scientific notation is formed using a base ten system.
  • how to apply laws for multiplying and dividing exponents

Skills

Students are able to:
  • Write numbers in standard notation in scientific notation.
  • Convert numbers from scientific notation back to standard form.
  • Use information given in scientific notation to estimate very large or small quantities given in real-world contexts.
  • Perform multiplication and division with numbers expressed in scientific notation to solve real-world problems, including problems where both scientific and decimal notation are used.
  • Choose between appropriate units of measure when determining solutions or estimating

Understanding

Students understand that:
  • The movement of decimals in converting between scientific and standard notation is a function of an exponent.
  • Every decimal place represents a power of ten (this is a connection many students have not made yet when thinking about place value).
  • Scientific notation has real-world applications for very large and very small quantities found in many disciplines.
  • performing scientific notation operations are another application of integer exponent operations.

  • I can choose appropriate units of measure when using scientific notation.

Activity Details

  1. Students will demonstrate their mastery of performing operations with numbers expressed in scientific notation, including problems with both decimal and scientific notation, converting between forms as needed through interactive game-based Quizizz. The students and teacher will follow these steps:
  2. The teacher will have the students log on to https://quizizz.com/.
  3. The students will be prompted to enter the game code for the Operations with Scientific Notation Practice Problems. (See additional information below for alternative ways to assign the game.)
  4. The teacher will display the game code at the front of the class.
  5. The students will enter their names, which will appear on the screen at the front as they join--no student accounts are needed.
  6. Once everyone has joined, the teacher will need to press the “Start” button on the teacher device, which will then display the name of the Quizizz and a count down from 5 indicating the game is about to start.
  7. Students work as fast as they can to answer multiple-choice style questions on performing operations with numbers expressed in scientific notation, including problems where both decimal and scientific notation is used.
  8. The progress of students as they answer questions will be displayed on the live dashboard at the front of the class.
  9. Once the game has ended, the teacher can award the winner with the kudos he/she deserves.
  10. When the final leader board is displayed, every student can see their personal feedback on their device: total points, the number of correct/incorrect questions, and the position in the class they finished in.
  11. On the teacher device, there are options to review questions, see the class accuracy, see the toughest question, the question that took the longest to answer, and interesting facts.
  12. Also on the teacher device, the teacher can choose to download the quiz results. This provides a spreadsheet listing each of your students, how they answered each question, and how long it took them. Correct answers are highlighted in green, and incorrect ones are in red.
  13. The teacher will use the results to determine whether the students understand performing operations with numbers expressed in scientific notation, including problems where both decimal and scientific notation is used.
  14. Press the ‘Play Again’ button to instantly play the same Quizizz again if further review is needed. Your students’ devices will automatically reset to the start of the game or the teacher can search for a different Quizizz game.
