Seven Steps to Successful Writing: The Post Test

Overview

This activity is the follow-up to the Pre-Test. It serves to introduce or refresh students about the steps in the writing process before writing an essay. This is a post-test to see what the students know before writing an essay. It gives the definitions of the seven steps and can be used to study throughout the course of the year.

    Students will explain and list the steps of The Writing Process by taking a post-test to connect the steps with the correct definitions.  

    Activity Details

    Teachers: Before you begin writing essays, this would be a great introduction (and refresher throughout the year) to get students prepared to be successful with the writing process. 

    Step 1: Create or log into a Google account and make a copy of this Google Doc titled The Writing Process Post Test. 

    Step 2: Cover or take down the anchor chart created in the first activity so the students cannot see the answers to the post-test.

    Step 3: Print out page one for each student to write on and keep a copy to study from. Print out page two for the teacher to refer to for the answer key. 

    Step 4: Introduce the post-test and read over the instructions with the students. Treat the assignment as a test to determine if the students have learned the writing process after having reviewed the materials in the past few activities. This would be a great time to walk around the class and observe the students.

    Step 5: The teacher may decide to allow the students to grade their own paper as the teacher gives the correct answers out loud or, the teacher can collect the tests and make the corrections to see where students are in their learning. 

    Step 6: As a class, go over the answers once you've taken up the tests and discuss the differences in the stages. This would be a great time to uncover the anchor chart created in the first activity.

    Students will write their answers to the post-test 7 Steps in The Writing Process. As the teacher observes the student's answers, the teacher can measure how much additional instruction the students may need to utilize the Writing Process before utilizing the process to develop writing pieces in various genres. 

    Acceleration

    For advanced students who may finish quickly, make copies of various written works in the different stages of writing and have the students identify which stage(s) of the work has been completed.

    Intervention

    The teacher can allow students to use their previous notes taken in the activity titled, "Write On!"
