Overview

This read-aloud will engage students and get them thinking about grouping hundreds, tens, and singles to make numbers. The students in Earth Day Hooray! have the challenge to collect 5,000 aluminum cans. At the end of each day, they have to add to their previous totals. They do this by adding hundreds first, then tens, and then the ones. The teacher will stop the video after each day and ask questions that will make the students mentally add and subtract numbers.

Phase

Before/Engage
Mathematics (2019) Grade(s): 2

MA19.2.13

Mentally add and subtract 10 or 100 to a given number between 100 and 900.

UP:MA19.2.13

Knowledge

Students know:
  • use place value models for adding and subtracting numbers from 1 to 1000.
  • use strategies for mentally adding and subtracting multiples of 10 and 100.

Skills

Students are able to:
  • use patterns and regularity in counting sequences and understandings of place value to add or subtract a "ten" or a "hundred".
  • communicate reasoning and solution strategies.

Understanding

Students understand that:
  • the digits of a 3-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens and ones.
  • patterns in the place value system can be used to mentally compute sums and differences.

Learning Objectives

The students will be able to mentally add and subtract 10 or 100 to a given number between 100 and 900.

Activity Details

  • The students will listen to the read-aloud of Stuart Murphy's book, Earth Day Hooray!.
  • The teacher will stop the video after each new day's cans are collected:
  1. Stop the Video at 3:43. The teacher will ask questions such as: "Today the students collected three bags of a hundred, 5 five bags of ten, and nine singles. How many cans did they collect today? How many do they have in all? How many more can they need to reach their goal?"  After the students have answered the questions, the teacher will resume the video.
  2. Stop the Video at 4:42. The teacher will ask: How many cans did they collect today? How many do they have in all? How many more can they need to reach their goal?"  After the students have answered the questions, the teacher will resume the video.
  3. Stop the Video at 5:31. The teacher will ask: How many cans did they collect today? How many do they have in all? How many more can they need to reach their goal?"  After the students have answered the questions, the teacher will resume the video.
  4. Stop the Video at 6:54. The teacher will ask: How many cans did they collect today? How many do they have in all? How many more can they need to reach their goal?"  After the students have answered the questions, the teacher will resume the video.
  • (Optional) Once the video has been completed, the teacher should review the lesson by asking the students to do more mental math problems.

Assessment Strategies

  • The teacher will observe student responses to determine student understanding of the concept and skill.
  • The teacher can use the following guidelines to ensure students meet the learning objective.

Check that the student:

  1. can mentally determine the numbers by using place value strategies.
  2. can mentally add the hundreds and tens to the previous total.

Variation Tips

  • If the teacher chooses to use the book, sticky notes can be placed over all the answers so that students are doing the math as he/she reads the story.
  • This option helps make reading the book more interactive.

Background / Preparation

  • The teacher will need a computer and projector to show the read-aloud video. (A copy of the book may be used instead of the video.)
  • (Optional) The teacher should prepare additional mental math problems for the students.
