Overview

In this activity, students will be assessed on decomposing a given number less than 10 into at least two pairs of smaller numbers and record their solutions using a number bond and number sentence.

Learning Objectives

Students are able to:
- use objects or drawings to decompose the given number into at least two pairs of smaller numbers.
- record their solutions using pictures or equations. 

Activity Details

  1. The teacher will print the exit slip for each student.
  2. Students will be given a number less than or equal to 10 to represent on the printed exit slip.
  3. Students will illustrate the given number into at least two pairs of smaller numbers on the number bond.
  4. Students will then complete the sentence frame writing the number pairs that make up the given number.

Assessment Strategies

The exit slip will be used as the assessment.

Collect exit slips and use the following guidelines to ensure students met the learning objective.

Check that the student:

  1. was able to decompose the given number into two pairs of smaller numbers.
  2. was able to record their solutions in the sentence frame using correct numbers.

Variation Tips

Once your students have mastered representing the given quantity physically, pictorially, and symbolically, encourage them to record the equation that represents their decomposition.

Background / Preparation

Make a copy of the Exit Slip for each student.
