Learning Resource Type

Learning Activity

Subject Area

Mathematics

Grade(s)

K

Overview

In this learning activity, the students will watch a video about the number pairs that make up the number 5. The students will sing along with the video and perform the hand movements making number pairs for the number 5.

This activity was created as a result of the ALEX Resource Development Summit.

UP:MA19.K.10

Vocabulary

  • Decompose
  • Equation

Knowledge

Students know:
  • "equal to" and the concept of equality meaning "the same as."
  • Addition is putting together numbers and subtraction is taking apart numbers.

Students are able to:
  • Represent quantities physically, pictorially, and symbolically.

Understanding

Students understand that:
  • quantities may be named in a variety of ways.

Learning Objectives

Students are able to:

- use objects or drawings to decompose the given number into at least two pairs of smaller numbers.

- record their solutions using pictures or equations.

Activity Details

  1. Play the video the first time just for the students to watch.
  2. Play the video the second time and ask the students to stand and sing along with the video while performing the hand movements as Jack Hartmann does in the video.
  3. The teacher will walk around the room observing the students for correct hand movements.

Assessment Strategies

The teacher will walk around the classroom the second time the video is played to observe the students using hand movements while making the number pairs for 5.

Variation Tips

Once your students have mastered number pairs to 5, you may show the Jack Hartmann video on number pairs to make 6.

Struggling students can be partnered with another student.

Background / Preparation

The teacher will need an internet-connected device to play the video.

Prepare the students to watch a video and perform hand movements.
