Overview

Seesaw is an online portfolio that allows students to document their learning.  Students can use Seesaw to add artifacts throughout the year. This activity is to have students solve a word problem and explain it within Seesaw.

This activity was created as a result of the DLCS COS Resource Development Summit.

    Learning Objectives

    Students will use pictures, objects, drawings, and video to explain how to solve an addition word problem using three addends.

    Students will demonstrate safe use of digital devices.

    Students will produce authentic artifacts that include multimedia.

     

    Activity Details

    1. The student will log in to their Seesaw account.

    2. The student will take a picture of an addition word problem with three addends provided by the teacher.

    3. The student will use the tools within Seesaw to draw pictures, symbols, or equations to solve the problem.  They will record audio explaining what they are doing as they draw the picture.

    4. The student will click the green check mark to turn his or her solution in and add it to his or her portfolio.

    Assessment Strategies

    The teacher will review each student’s picture and audio.  The teacher will check for correct answers and how students solved the problem.  The teacher will observe students using digital devices safely.  The teacher will review the student's artifact for accuracy.

    Background / Preparation

    Before using this activity, teachers will need to set up a Seesaw account for each student.  The teacher will need to print a copy of a word problem for each student to use. The teacher will need to model how to use the tools within Seesaw for students and the students need to be proficient in using these tools.
