Overview

This measurement menu is comprised of 11 interactives teachers can use with students to practice converting within the customary and metric systems of measurement. Students practice converting measures of length, weight, and capacity, as well as determining which unit of measurement is appropriate for a given object. The interactives are available to be played in relaxed mode or timed mode for an additional challenge.

This activity results from the ALEX Resource Gap Project.

MA19.5.17

Convert among different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system and use these conversions in solving multi-step, real-world problems.

UP:MA19.5.17

Vocabulary

  • Measurement system
  • US Customary
  • Metric
  • Unit
  • Conversion
  • Equivalent measurements

Knowledge

Students know:
  • Strategies for converting a larger unit of measure to a smaller unit in the same system.
  • Relative size of customary and metric units of measure.
  • Strategies for converting between units of measure in the same system.

Skills

Students are able to:
  • Convert measurement units.
  • Solve multi-step word problems involving measurement conversions.

Understanding

Students understand that:
  • the multiplicative relationship between units of measures given in the same measurement system is essential when converting units to a larger or smaller unit.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will convert among different units of measurement within the customary system to solve real-world problems.
  • Students will convert among different units of measurement within the metric system to solve real-world problems.
  • Students will determine the appropriate unit of measurement for a given object.

Activity Details

During or after a lesson on converting within a system of measurement, students can practice skills individually or with a partner on the specific interactive the teacher has taught.

The customary interactives are on the left-hand side and the metric interactives on the right. Depending on the sequence that the teacher chooses to teach these skills, students may need to practice only on one side or the other, or only on a given skill (length, volume, mass) within both systems of measurement. Students will need to have mastery of these skills before solving real-world problems involving conversions.

Students may initially choose to play each interactive in relaxed mode and then timed mode for a challenge.

Assessment Strategies

Students should be able to use the skills obtained in the lesson and practiced in the interactives to solve real-world problems. Assess student mastery with a combination of skills in isolation, and then through application such as this activity. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1h5DSnI9dKEBKjTxQWj0asbELda3XPhXXhmd0L8HM6uo/edit?usp=sharing

Background / Preparation

The teacher should practice using the interactives and ensure students have compatible devices.

*These interactives are not comprehensive of all units of customary measurement. It does not ask students to practice capacity conversions with fluid ounces, cups, gallons, or pints. It does not ask students to practice mass conversions with tons. Teachers will need to provide additional opportunities for students to practice these conversions.
