Learning Objectives

The students will review and revise a text using digital tools.

Activity Details

The teacher will:

  • distribute a digital copy of the poem to each student using whatever method best suits the teacher

Discuss with the students that they will change the way their words look - which is called formatting

Give simple one-step directions and allow time for the students to complete the directions.

  • Students highlight the title of the poem and make it bold - discuss the meaning of the term bold

  • Explain to the students that they can apply more than one formatting style to text.

  • Highlight the title again and underline it.  Repeat the procedure to make the font size of the title size 20.

  • Now explain the icons for aligning text and have the students center the title

Give directions for students to format various parts of the poem as directed:

  • Bold - the word "Ladybug" wherever you see it

  • Underline the word “fly”

  • Italicize the word "crept"

  • Change the font color of the word "fire" to red

Continue with the additional formatting of various words as time allows.

Insert a picture of a ladybug to the bottom of the document. Walk the students through the steps of inserting an image. The specifics of this step will be based on whether the teacher allows the students to search for an image or preselects a few images and saves them to a specific location which he/she will guide the students to or the teacher may select a few specific images for students to choose from or leave it open for students to search for an image of their choice. If time is an issue it is suggested that the teacher narrow their choices to three or four and preload them to a specific location.  (This would be the suggested method for early learners with images.)

Assessment Strategies

Teacher observation of students working.

Completed student product.  Teachers will receive a completed student product using their preferred method. (shared doc, saved to a shared folder, printed, etc.)

Variation Tips

Repeat the activity with additional poems.

Background / Preparation

Arrange a method to electronically deliver a copy of the poem to each student based on the teacher's available tools. This will vary based on what tools the teacher has to use. (shared doc, shared folder, electronic distribution program)
