Overview

Students will listen to a variety of song clips with varying tempi. Using a worksheet, the students will circle the correct tempo. Students will identify contrasts in music.

Learning Objectives

Students will:

  • identify presto and largo while listening to a variety of music clips.

Activity Details

1.  Review definitions of presto and largo.

2.  Explain directions to students:

  • Students will listen to 5 clips of music. 
  • They will circle the correct tempo of the music clip on the worksheet.

3.  Distribute pencils and "Presto and Largo Assessment" worksheet.

4.  Instruct students to write their name at the top of their paper.

5.  Play Music Clips #1 - #5 (see notes for clip options) and allow time for students to mark their worksheet after each clip.

6.  Collect worksheets.

7.  Grade worksheets and determine if the students have mastered Presto and Largo or if re-teaching is necessary.

 

 

Assessment Strategies

1.  The teacher will use the "Presto and Largo Assessment" worksheet as a summative assessment after students circle the correct answer for the five music clips.

Background / Preparation

1.  Download and copy "Presto and Largo Assessment" worksheet.

2.  Sharpen enough pencils for largest class plus extras.

3.  Copy worksheets for the entire grade level.

4.  Choose 5 music clips with fast and slow tempi, such as:

    • Moonlight Sonata (slow)
    • Flight of the Bumblebee (fast)
    • Dance of the Unhatched Chicks (fast)
    • Carnival of the Animals: Donkeys (fast)
    • Carnival of the Animals: Tortoises (slow)

5.  Keep track of the order of clips so grading will be correct.
