Overview

This learning activity contains 6 formative assessments and 1 summative assessment on using addition and subtraction to solve word problems within 20. In each assessment, students solve for the sum or difference in a word problem.  Students should justify their answers using concrete objects or drawings. 

This activity was created as a result of the ALEX Resource Development Summit.

Students will be able to :

  • use a variety of representations to demonstrate their knowledge of solving word problems.
  • justify and explain answers using concrete objects and drawings.

Activity Details

  1. Choose one of the formative assessments and give it to the students as a Quick Write activity.
  2. Evaluate students' ability to show an understanding of how to read and identify important operations in a word problem. 
  3. Ask the students to highlight important information on the Quick Write that will be used to solve the problem (some, some more, how many left, altogether).
  4. Ask students to illustrate the problem to generate the solution.
  5. Have students write a number sentence and a final answer.
Assessment Strategies

Assessment Strategies

  • The Quick Write will be used as the assessment.
  • The teacher can make notes if students are using addition or subtraction to find the answer.

Acceleration

To expand this tool have students show 2 different ways to write the answer and equation.
