Overview

This lesson incorporates an interactive image created in Genial.ly to explore three works by Pablo Neruda. Working together, students will listen to and analyze the lyrics of each poem to compare and contrast the themes and symbols of each.  

This activity is a result of the ALEX Resource Development Summit.

Learning Objectives

In the target language, students will be able to:

  • interpret and analyze poems by Pablo Neruda.
  • identify and present the events referenced, the theme, and symbols in each poem.

Activity Details

*Students should be familiar with Pablo Neruda and the preterit tense prior to this activity.

  1. Students should be divided into groups of three to four. Groupings can be created randomly or at students’ choice, decided by the teacher.

  2. The teacher will ask the students to briefly share what they know about author and poet, Pablo Neruda, to review.

  3. The teacher will display the interactive image from Genial.ly – Poemas de Pablo Neruda - and invite the students to open the image on their personal devices.

  4. The teacher will guide the students to read the instructions at the purple INFO button on the top left. The “circle pointing hand button” at the top right will highlight the interactive parts of the image.

  5. The students will be given 15+ minutes to listen and analyze the poems as well as talk and answer the discussion questions. As the students work, the teacher should move about the room to answer questions, clarify information, and keep the students on task.

  6. Each group will be given a printed handout on which to write the answers to their group’s discussion.

  7. After the allotted time, the teacher will review each of the poems and questions by asking groups to share their answers. The teacher can correct any grammatical or vocabulary errors as needed. The teacher can write the answers given by the students on the board.

  8. Each group will turn in the handout for a classwork grade.

Assessment Strategies

The worksheet included in the activity represents a formative assessment as does the teacher listening to students’ conversation as they are working.

For a further summative assessment, students could write a reflective essay on these three poems outlining the life and works of Pablo Neruda. Students could also research another work on Pablo Neruda to compare and contrast it to the three focused on in this activity.

Variation Tips

The English translations of each poem have been provided but required highlighting the text to view. For a higher proficiency level, require that students do not refer to the English translations.

For lower proficiency levels, each poem could be listened and analyzed as a class and then the discussion questions completed in small groups.

Background and Preparation

Background / Preparation

Share the interactive image on teacher web page or school learning management system prior to class.

Prepare student groupings – Class Dojo is a great classroom management application that randomly arranges student groups.

Print handouts for each group. If you would prefer that each student record the information, prepare the required number of copies.
