Overview

In this activity, students will solve a real-world problem involving perimeter. The task asks students to find the perimeter of their new bedroom. A diagram of the room is given, but students must determine the length of the missing sides to correctly calculate the perimeter.

Activity Details

The teacher will give each student a copy of the task. The students are presented with the following scenario:

"You have just moved into your new home. Your mom has agreed to let you border your room with LED lights. Use the diagram of your room below to answer the questions." The students will use the diagram to find the perimeter. They will use what they know about rectangles to determine the lengths of the missing sides.

In conclusion, the students will answer the following questions:

  1. How many feet of LED lights will you need?
  2. If the lights come in rolls of 25 feet, how many rolls will you need?
  3. If the lights cost $19.23 each, how much money will you spend?

Assessment Strategies

The teacher will observe student responses to determine student understanding of the concept and skill. The teacher can use the following guidelines to ensure students meet the learning objective.

Check that the student:

  1. can correctly determine the lengths of the missing sides.
  2. can correctly solve for the perimeter of the bedroom.

This task may be used as an individual assessment piece or students may work together in partners or groups.
