Learning Activity

Quadrilateral Quest

Subject Area

Mathematics

Grade(s)

4

Overview

This activity will give students the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of the properties of quadrilaterals. Students will match the quadrilaterals with the properties given in this fun shape matching game. This activity should be used at the end of a lesson on quadrilaterals to assess mastery of the properties of quadrilaterals.

This activity results from the ALEX Resource Development Summit.

    MA19.4.28

Identify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size.

    Unpacked Content

    UP:MA19.4.28

    Vocabulary

    • Two-dimensional figure
    • Parallel lines
    • Perpendicular lines
    • Angle
    • Right triangle

    Knowledge

    Students know:
    • Two lines are parallel if they never intersect and are an equal distance apart.
    • Two lines are perpendicular if they are at right angles to each other.
    • A right triangle is a triangle that has one right angle.

    Skills

    Students are able to:
    • Classify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines.
    • Classify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of angles of a specified size.
    • Identify right triangles.

    Understanding

    Students understand that:
    • shapes are categorized based on attributes they possess in common such as angle size, side length, side relationships (parallel and perpendicular).

    Learning Objectives

    Learning Objectives

Students will be able to classify two-dimensional figures based on angle sizes or the presence of parallel and/or perpendicular lines and congruency.

    Activity Details

Students should have been introduced to the properties of quadrilaterals (square, rhombus, rectangle, trapezoid, kite, parallelogram), and have had an opportunity to explore and investigate the concept of classifying quadrilaterals based on those properties. The teacher may choose to review the properties of quadrilaterals as an introduction to this learning activity. This activity can be used to give students the chance to demonstrate their knowledge of the properties and explain their thinking.

The teacher should provide the students with a link to the website Quadrilateral Quest and explain the directions on how to use the website.

The students should have discovered in class that there are some really fine points in the definitions of different quadrilaterals. For example, a square is a special kind of rectangle. It is a parallelogram that also has 90-degree angles, but unlike most rectangles, ALL of its sides are equal or congruent. During this activity, students will demonstrate how well they can select the correct quadrilaterals that match each property.

Students will click and drag the quadrilaterals (rhombus, square, trapezoid, rectangle, kite, parallelogram) that match the given properties. If students choose the correct quadrilateral, they will hear a ring, and the green light will blink. If students choose the wrong quadrilateral, they will hear a bonk and the red light will blink.

As students explore the quest, the teacher should walk around the room and observe any students who might be struggling to correctly identify quadrilaterals matching the given properties.

After matching 6 different property descriptions, students will be given a quiz to identify the one quadrilateral which matches the given properties. If the students match incorrectly, they will hear a bonk and get another guess. If the students match correctly, they will be able to move on to the next question. There are a total of 6 questions on the quiz.

    Assessment Strategies

    Assessment Strategies

The quiz given at the end of the game can be used as an assessment. If playing this game as a whole class activity, the quiz can be used as an assessment by placing sticky notes with A, B, C, D, etc. on each quadrilateral choice. Students can record their choice on a piece of paper to submit to the teacher as an exit ticket.

    Variation Tips

This game could be played on the Smartboard as a whole class game or individual/partner activity.
