Use a Parking Lot to Gather Data for a Database

Overview

This activity allows students to create a database on paper. They will use a teacher-created table template that matches a database report template. Working in teams, students will use the student parking lot to find information about vehicles (such as the make of vehicle, model, number of doors, etc.) The team will fill in the template to create the information for a database to be created later. This helps show a connection from raw data collection to database creation.

    Learning Objectives

    Students will collect raw data that will be used in the creation of a simple database.  

    Activity Details

    1. Students will be divided into groups of 3 - 5.
    2. Each group will pick up a clipboard, pencil, and table template.
    3. Explain that students are beginning a unit on database creation and usage.
    4. Students will preview the table template to see what type of information they will be gathering.
    5. Students will go out to the student parking lot (accompanied by the teacher).
    6. Students will find ten vehicles of their choice and fill out the appropriate data on the template for each vehicle.
    7. The data the students collect will be used as a source of raw data to later create a database in database software.

    As each group finishes, the template is brought to the teacher to check that all data has been correctly recorded. 

    Later, as each group creates a database, the teacher will check their database on the group's computer to see that the data is entered correctly.

    Variation Tips

    If the school does not have a student parking lot, you might use the teacher parking lot. You may also use an internet search for vehicles. If you choose the internet search, you would want to change your table labels accordingly to match internet search results.

    1. Collect clipboards and pencils for each group.
    2. Create a table on a Word document or Google Docs.
      1. A link to a sample Doc is provided in the digital resources.
    3. Have enough rows in the table so that students will be able to check out several vehicles. Ten is an adequate number.
    4. Put appropriate titles as labels on the top row of the table (Make, Model, # of Doors, # of tires, Car Truck SUV, Basic Color, Specialty tag yes or no, 4 Wheel Drive yes or no, or anything else appropriate for your group).
    5. Print enough copies for your class groups.
    6. Tell students ahead of time to wear comfortable footwear and attire for outdoor activity.
