This novice mid to novice high French activity leads students through the process of inviting others to a variety of events. Then, they are challenged with the task of accepting or rejecting the invitations using the target language. A slide presentation is provided to guide the class through the activity. After a brief warm-up that reviews necessary vocabulary, students are given 5 minutes to plan a fun activity using a set of provided activity cards as a guide. They will then take turns sharing their written invitations and have students verbally accept or reject each invite using the targeted vocabulary.

This novice-high to intermediate-low writing activity encourages German students to use an authentic website to write get-well cards to their peers in class. The instructions ask students to select a German card from the site, write an email, and then send it to a friend in class. Those who are novice learners should be sure to write in the present tense and focus on asking how their friend feels and what is going on. This is a public domain Spanish language copy of Miguel Cervante's Don Quixote. This site includes an organized table of contents linking the reader to each chapter in the book, making it easy to locate the sections of the text that are recommended by the College Board for the AP Spanish Literature and Culture exam. This resource provides students an opportunity to interpret, restate, and react to what is read in the authentic written text. The text can also be used to describe the main ideas and significant details from the story.

This novice low to novice mid activity introduces French students to the authentic resource, Paris Match. This online version of the popular magazine is much like People or Time magazine in the United States. Students are provided a printable PDF that keeps them on task as they search through the website looking for recognizable words and cognates. They start by examining the person featured on the current cover and are then asked to choose an article in which to look over and gather basic information, making inferences into what the article is about.

This website offers direct links to 11 different Chinese language newspapers. These authentic materials in the target langauge were published for Chinese speakers and provide lots of interpretive reading practice for students as they explore current events from throughout China.

Vocabulary Bingo is a common activity for any novice level language classroom. This printable game board is ready to be used for any vocabulary topic. An additional printout is posted in the comment section for those who would like to print smaller boards, two to a page. To play Bingo, students should write a vocabulary word from their current unit in each box on the board. Teachers of novice low students show photos of items and students mark off the corresponding vocabulary word if it appears on their board. Teachers of novice mid or high students should read a sentence describing a vocabulary word. Students use the definitions to identify the vocabulary word and mark it off if the word appears on their board.

This resource provides 3 separate video clips of French speakers, each of which illustrates the task of asking and responding to questions. Students use interpretive listening skills to identify main ideas and examine how questions are formed and used through these authentic resources. The videos were prepared for intermediate and advanced level learners but could be used with novice learners as a way to introduce them to authentic language. Each video clip provides a French-language transcript and links to grammar reviews and activities for the concepts that are heard in the clip. This is an intermediate low to intermediate mid reading and listening activity that introduces students to Inca Kola, a popular soda beverage in Peru. The linked article includes 5 multiple choice comprehension questions to check for understanding. Students are then asked to watch 4 different Inca Kola commercials and prepare answers to provided questions. This activity is set up to be completed for homework but can be completed within the classroom if desired.

In this 9th-12th grade lesson, students will learn about traditional Latin dance styles such as salsa, mambo, merengue, rumba, cha cha, bachata, and samba. They will generate essential questions and conduct research about a particular Latin dance and its country of origin. Students will draw comparisons between the dances through presentations and dance demonstrations. While the videos are provided in English, Spanish language questions are included to facilitate target language discussion. For those wishing to incorporate the community standards, students can arrange to perform their researched dances for the school or community in an effort to bring awareness to the target culture. It is important to note that this lesson also follows national standards for dance, allowing it to connect with elective courses.

In this intermediate mid to intermediate-high ASL activity, students will practice discussing the concept of time in American Sign Language. They will also focus on discussion time conflicts through interpersonal conversations. The activity asks students to each select a prepared card that includes the details of their assignment and serves as a guide to keep the students on task as they converse. A Google slide show is included to walk the teacher and student through each step of the activity.

This unique set of lessons is geared toward intermediate mid to intermediate high Spanish students working toward the AP Spanish Language and Culture Exam. The goal of this unit is to reinforce the theme of Personal and Public Identities as students practice each proficiency skill. The geographical region of emphasis is Honduras.  This unit includes an interactive PowerPoint that walks students through each individual activity as they click on icons within the slide. This printable Chinese poster is a unique way to reinforce emotions and feelings in novice low to novice mid-Chinese language classrooms. This is a novice-high Spanish activity in which students create a video describing their daily routine in Spanish. Printable project instructions, planning templates, and a rubric are included within the resource. Students use the included resources to work individually or in groups as they use presentational speaking skills to tell about their daily routines. This activity will also give students a chance to examine how reflexive verbs are used when describing routines. Students can use reflexive verbs in either present or preterit tense, depending on their proficiency level.

This resource is specifically for novice German learners as they learn how the German language grammatically works. This site brings the beloved Grimm Fairytale characters into the 21st century. As these characters adapt to modern-day challenges, students are able to see specific grammar points used in context.  Each part of speech is introduced by an overview and then further examined as students read the stories and see the concepts applied to communicative contexts using mostly discourse-length language samples.

This novice low French activity provides a fun way to practice pronunciation of French sounds. As a warm up, teachers use a series of pre-printed cards as they model the pronunciation of each word and sound. Students are to repeat the words. Then, teachers lead students through reciting a variety of tongue twisters, focusing on specific pronunciation sounds. Six different tongue twister cards are provided. The teacher can lead the class through each one or have students work in pairs to practice the phrases, paying special attention to the phonetic sounds made by the French alphabet.

This interactive hands-on French activity introduces students to the artist Henri Rousseau and his artistic style. This novice-high to intermediate-high German activity provides resources necessary for completing a series of communicative and interpretive tasks as students explore the world of fast food using a variety of authentic resources. Interpretive reading skills are used as students explore a target language menu. Audio files and video files are included for interpretive listening tasks. Other printable resources (including a menu) are included to assist in interpersonal communicative tasks as students practice ordering food. The resources are carefully chosen to introduce students to a wide variety of authentic foods, introducing them to culturally appropriate products. The included activities can be adapted for a variety of levels in middle school and high school German classes.

This novice low to novice mid-French activity allows students to gather information from four different heritage French speakers: Franck, J-C, Stephanie, and Virginie. Students are asked to gather information as the speakers describe themselves, describe celebrities, and compare French and American stereotypes. This advanced-level Spanish project-based learning (PBL) unit challenges students to work in groups as they examine a problem, investigate the situation, and propose a solution. The unit includes a calendar pacing out each of the 8 class days required for the PBL. At the end of each class period students are provided a self-evaluation to reflect on tasks accomplished and plan for their next steps. All necessary resources regarding the presented problem as well as investigative resources are included.  (Click on the Lecturas iniciales link to access a google folder with printable resources). At the end of the lesson, students present their findings orally and in writing following the provided guidelines and rubrics. A bibliography is provided to assist students in researching the problem. This PBL specifically focuses on the controversy surrounding bullfighting in Spain.

This activity is popular among novice low and novice mid students who are learning lots of vocabulary across a wide variety of topics. This printable game card is fashioned after the popular board game Scattergories. Each student or student team is provided a card. The teacher calls out a letter of the alphabet and students write down a vocabulary word that starts with that letter and that represents the categories on the game card. After two to three minutes the teacher calls time and students stop writing. Students share their words with others. If any other student has the same word then that word does not count. Only students with unique words that were not written by others will receive a point. This challenges students to think about more advanced vocabulary rather than using the most common words. The categories on the card include the following: Names, Food, Places, Clothing, Animals, Body, House, School, and City. 

This novice mid to novice high Spanish activity requires students to use interpretive listening skills as they listen to an authentic resource. The included video is an interview with a native speaker from Madrid. Students are encouraged to gather basic information such as name, nationality, and greeting styles. After gathering this information students participate in an interpersonal communicative task as they hold a similar conversation with a partner. Finally, they use presentational skills to present to one of their classmates.

This intermediate low to intermediate-high activity focuses on the controversy surrounding artistic expression and graffiti. Students start by reading an article about the controversy in Colombia and then check their comprehension with a series of multiple-choice questions. Within the article, difficult words are highlighted in blue. If a student places the cursor over these words they will see a definition to assist them.  Afterward, students watch a short video clip about Stinkfish, a known graffiti artist from Colombia, and respond to a series of reflection questions in writing or in a group discussion. Students then work individually or in groups to research other graffiti artists in Colombia before sharing their findings with the class. Finally, students make comparisons between the themes of their researched artist and the themes noted in graffiti throughout the United States.

This Spanish language video was created specifically for novice low beginning students. It introduces students to 50 cognates, showing them that there are lots of similarities between Spanish and English. This is a great way to activate previous knowledge before introducing new material to students. A printable transcript is provided for teacher or student use. The provided link relies on Latin American Spanish but an option to view a Spain version is included. A set of printable activities is included to accompany this video.

This intermediate low to intermediate mid-Chinese activity allows students to reinforce their weather vocabulary. Students start by reviewing weather terms through a game of charades. A set of full-colored labeled weather cards are included so that students can draw a card and then act out the card they selected. After reviewing vocabulary, students use a prepared weather report worksheet to look up the weather for a target language city of their choice. Students then take turns presenting their findings by simulating weather reporters. An included PowerPoint highlights the can-do statements for this activity.

This novice low to novice mid activity allows students to hear vocabulary in context as they watch and analyze a video of friends meeting at a discotech. Students are also able to observe culturally appropriate gestures that are important to the greeting process within the Spanish culture. Students start by discussing greetings within their own culture then compare these ideas with those observed in the video interaction. They are also given an opportunity to examine how informal tones appear both through gestures and grammar usage. After copying vocabulary words and phrases onto the provided worksheet, students are asked to create and participate in their own conversations. A rubric is provided to assist in assessing the interpersonal task.
