Polygons in Real Life

Learning Resource Type

Learning Activity

Subject Area

Mathematics

Grade(s)

9, 10, 11, 12

Overview

This activity is a digital entry ticket for students. Students will share real-life applications of polygons while completing this activity. The purpose of this activity is to develop student interest in the properties of polygons.

This activity was created as a result of the ALEX Resource Development Summit.

Phase

Before/Engage
Mathematics (2019) Grade(s): 09-12 - Geometry with Data Analysis

MA19.GDA.36

Use geometric shapes, their measures, and their properties to model objects and use those models to solve problems.

UP:MA19.GDA.36

Vocabulary

  • Model

Knowledge

Students know:
  • Techniques to find measures of geometric shapes.
  • Properties of geometric shapes.

Skills

Students are able to:
  • Model a real-world object through the use of a geometric shape.
  • Justify the model by connecting its measures and properties to the object.

Understanding

Students understand that:
  • Geometric shapes may be used to model real-world objects.
  • Attributes of geometric figures help us identify the figures and find their measures. therefore, matching these figures to real-world objects allows the application of geometric techniques to real-world problems.

Learning Objectives

Students will use their prior knowledge of patterns and relationships in polygons to classify real-life polygons as regular or irregular.

Activity Details

  • Before beginning this activity, teachers may need to have a brief classroom discussion to distinguish between regular and irregular polygons.
  • The teacher will create a classroom poll using www.polleverywhere.com with the following prompt: Polygons in Real Life: Prove examples of a regular polygon and an irregular polygon.
  • Students will provide at most two responses to the activity prompt.
  • The teacher will use student responses to guide a class discussion.

Assessment Strategies

  • After students complete the activity, use the Think-Pair-Share learning strategy to have students name at least two ways polygons are used in daily life. The teacher should have groups share their thinking to assess if students can identify real-life polygons as regular or irregular.

Background / Preparation

The Poll Everywhere application allows for live audience participation using computers or mobile devices.

  • Presenters embed the poll within their presentation or web page, and the poll prompt is then displayed for audience members.
  • Audience members respond to the poll prompt by visiting a mobile-friendly web page or sending a text message.
  • Real-time poll updates are visible to participants.
