Word Expert: Perimeter and Area on the Coordinate Plane

Learning Resource Type

Learning Activity

Subject Area

Mathematics

Grade(s)

9, 10, 11, 12

Overview

In this activity, students will work in groups to create posters using Google Slides. Each poster will demonstrate an understanding of geometry words/skills that are prerequisites for computing the perimeters of polygons and the area of triangles in the coordinate plane. Students will complete this activity by providing constructive feedback to their peers via a virtual gallery walk.

This activity results from the ALEX Resource Development Summit.

Mathematics (2019) Grade(s): 09-12 - Geometry with Data Analysis

MA19.GDA.18

Given the coordinates of the vertices of a polygon, compute its perimeter and area using a variety of methods, including the distance formula and dynamic geometry software, and evaluate the accuracy of the results.

UP:MA19.GDA.18

Vocabulary

  • Coordinates
  • vertices
  • perimeter
  • Area
  • Distance formula
  • Evaluate
  • Accuracy

Knowledge

Students know:
  • The distance formula and its applications.
  • Techniques for coordinate graphing.
  • Techniques for using geometric software for coordinate graphing and to find the perimeter and area.

Skills

Students are able to:
  • Create geometric figures on a coordinate system from a contextual situation.
  • Accurately find the perimeter of polygons and the area of polygons such as triangles and rectangles from the coordinates of the shapes.
  • Explain and justify solutions in the original context of the situation.

Understanding

Students understand that:
  • Contextual situations may be modeled in a Cartesian coordinate system.
  • Coordinate modeling is frequently useful to visualize a situation and to aid in solving contextual problems.

Learning Objectives

Students will demonstrate an understanding of geometry words/skills that are prerequisites for computing perimeters of polygons and the area of triangles and rectangles in the coordinate plane.

Activity Details

  • The teacher will upload the Word Expert Google Slideshow to a learning platform that will allow every student to edit the Google Slide presentation, such as Google Classroom.
  • Each group of students will create a poster for their assigned word using the uploaded Google Slides presentation. The word assignments are on the Google Slideshow (see Slide 6): slope, parallel lines, perpendicular lines, perimeter, area, and distance along a line segment. The poster must include the following information: Vocabulary Word, Essential Characteristics, Example, and Non-Example.
  • Each group must post a link to their poster on the appropriate slide of this activity.
  • Finally, each group will provide collective feedback to three predetermined groups using one of the assigned prompts:
    1. I would suggest...
    2. I would like to know...
    3. This is strong because...

To conclude this activity, teachers may pose the following discussion questions to students via an online learning platform or during face-to-face instruction:

  • Why do you think gaining a better understanding of the vocabulary words in this activity will prepare you to compute the perimeters of polygons and the area of triangles and rectangles in the coordinate plane?
  • How does this activity make you feel more accountable for quality work?

Assessment Strategies

The group posters and class discussion will serve as an assessment to identify mastery of an understanding of geometry words/skills that are prerequisites for computing perimeters of polygons and the area of triangles and rectangles in the coordinate plane.

Background / Preparation

The activity will need to be shared with students on an online learning platform such as Google Classroom, Canvas, etc.
