Overview

In this activity, students will roll a die to fill in the prices of different ingredients for each meal on a menu. They will need to add, subtract, and multiply decimals to answer questions about the meals.

This activity results from the ALEX Resource Development Summit.

    Mathematics (2019) Grade(s): 5

    MA19.5.8

Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationships between addition/subtraction and multiplication/division; relate the strategy to a written method, and explain the reasoning used.

    Vocabulary

    • Decimal
    • Tenths
    • Hundredths
    • Place value

    Knowledge

    Students know:
    • Strategies based on place value understanding, properties, and relationship between operations to find the sum, difference, product, and quotient of whole numbers.
    • How to write decimal notation for fractions with denominators of 10 or 100.
    • Use estimation strategies to assess reasonableness of answers.

    Skills

    Students are able to:
    • Use concrete models, drawings, and strategies to add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals.
    • Relate strategies for operations with decimals to a written method and explain reasoning used.
    • Solve real-world context problems involving decimals.

    Understanding

    Students understand that:
    Problems involving operations with decimals
    • Can be solved using a variety of strategies based on place value, properties of operations, or the relationship between the operations.
    • Can be illustrated using concrete models or drawings.

    Learning Objectives

Students will be able to add, subtract, and multiply decimals to hundredths.

    Activity Details

Each student (or group of students) will need a die and a copy of the Decimal Menu page. Students will start by rolling the die to fill in each blank on the front of the menu.  They will also need to fill in the ingredients for the lunch meal (PB&J) and choose both the meal and the ingredients for the dinner section.

After filling in the blanks, the students will calculate the total price for each meal by adding the decimal prices for each ingredient. They will need to remember to line up the decimals when adding -- you may want to have students use graph paper as a tool for keeping the place values lined up.

The back of the menu has questions that require students to add, subtract, and multiply decimals based on the ingredients and prices from the menu.

    Assessment Strategies

    Assessment Strategies

The questions with the menu can be used as an assessment. Check the students' calculations to be sure they are performing the operations with decimals correctly.

    Variation Tips

You can use any type of dice with single-digit numbers. If you don't have access to dice, students can use an online dice generator.

    Background and Preparation

    Background / Preparation

You will need dice for each student or group of students and a copy of the decimal menu sheet for each student (the activity can also be done in pairs or in groups). Students may benefit from using graph paper for working the problems.

Students will need to be familiar with adding, subtracting, and multiplying decimals for this activity.
